Confession: Madonna →

No one wants to realize, but Madonna is the Queen of Pop Culture and your favs. See how all your sleazy favs throw themselves out there & it’s seen as “typical popstar behavior”? They can only get away with it because Madonna paved their way. She fought for gay rights before it was a trend, she…

Anonymous asked: I have a question: I know Madonna appropriated Voguing, but did MJ appropriate the moonwalk? I told someone that Madonna didn't invent Voguing, and didnt give Black and Latino gays the proper credit for it, is it the same in MJ's case?

Uhm, the moonwalk is a popping move which has been popular in Hip-Hop / Black culture since the 1960s, esp. in California. First person recorded to do it was Cab Calloway in 1932. Michael Jackson couldn’t have appropriated this because he was Black and has claim to Black culture as any other Black person would. Madonna is a White woman who took something from Harlem (Black and Latino dancers) c. 1960s, and thus appropriated it because she presented it as something that was hers. Not the same because one person (MJ) expressed something from their own culture and history while the other (Madonna) stole something.

Excuse me but when did Madonna steal vogueing and claimed it her own? I don’t think she ever did and I hate the way some people demonize Madonna for the sake of it. Her song Vogue is all about tolerance and expressing yourself on the dancefloor. “It makes no difference if you’re black or white, if you’re a boy or girl"…? Madonna was used to going to gay clubs as she had many gay friends, so she felt close to that culture. She never said "I invented these dance moves". I don’t think it’s a bad thing that she made it popular, on the contrary, it allowed more people to aknowledge it. But because she’s a rich white woman, it seems like everything she does is selfish and self-oriented without any good intentions to it.

On the other hand, too many people think that Michael Jackson invented the moonwalk, whereas everybody knows that Madonna didn’t invent vogueing. But I guess it’s not the same because well, it’s Madonna and she’s an evil cultural-appropriative bitch.

Yeah, I didn’t “demonize” her for anything I answered a question. She’s not gay. “Gay culture” is not hers for the taking, period. Especially not Black/Latino gay culture that gets erased from recognition at every turn because of people who “popularize” things without really putting any effort into crediting or making references to the creators. I also didn’t say she explicitly said she created it, I said she presented it as hers; which she did. Who’s dancing it in Vogue? Her. There are majority White people in the background if I recall, and there’s literally one Black guy. So much for not caring if you’re Black or White, right, so long as you literally have a token Black it’s kewl.

And Michael Jackson was Black so even with people thinking he created it—and given eh was the main user of his era that’s not completely inaccurate—it’s still credited to Black culture. Whereas a White woman taking something from Black/Latino subcultures is completely delineating it from its origin; therefore those are not even vaguely equivalent. And I literally didn’t say she was evil or anything like that but keep being ridiculous I really couldn’t care less. Madonna is shite for much more than that.

I see your point. Just one thing, these are the dancers in the Vogue video, as well as the ones touring with her that same year:

As you can see, three black men, two Asian people, two latino men and one caucasian man. Out of these 7 handsome gentleman, only 1 is straight. The one on top of Madonna, José, was the one who taught Madonna how to Vogue. So it might seem like she presented voguing as her own, but in fact, she took with her all the people who taught her that.

I love how people rag on Hard Candy and MDNA as if “Some Girls,” “Love Spent,” “Miles Away,” “She’s Not Me,” “Gang Bang,” “Falling Free,” “Turn Up The Radio,” “Give It 2 Me” and “Beautiful Killer,” among others, aren’t just as fuckin’ genius as anything off of Ray Of Light.
